Noted liturgical scholar and Vatican official Fr. Uwe Michael Lang will give a talk introducing the forthcoming English translation of the ordinary form of the Mass on Wednesday, June 2nd, at 8:00PM in the parish hall of St. Mary Church, 669 West Avenue, Norwalk. The talk will be preceded by a Missa cantata in the extraordinary form at 7:00PM, in the spirit of the “mutual enrichment” called for by Pope Benedict XVI.
Fr. Lang is a Consultor to the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of
the Supreme Pontiff, and director of the Master’s degree program in
architecture, sacred art, and liturgy at the European University of
Rome. An expert in early Christianity, his well-known study of the
orientation of liturgical prayer has been published by Ignatius Press
under the title Turning Towards the Lord.
Fr. Lang presented a lecture last summer on sacred art and architecture in the thought of Pope Benedict XVI in an event co-sponsored by the Society. In 2007 he also appeared with German novelist Martin Mosebach in an event sponsored by the Society.
The Society of St. Hugh of Cluny was founded to “support the recovery of Catholic liturgy and the reform of Church and society”. Though our efforts in this direction are inspired by Pope Benedict’s motu proprio Summorum Pontificum and therefore devoted primarily to the restoration of the traditional form of the Roman liturgy, our co-sponsorship of this event is in keeping with both our pastoral aims and our broad interest in the intersection of liturgy and culture, in this case the issue of sacred language. Fr. Lang has an established academic interest in this topic, as well as a valuable practical perspective from his work in the Vatican, and we are very grateful that he has made himself available to give this presentation. Mindful of the fact that the new translation of the Mass will deeply affect the prayer lives of almost all practicing Roman Rite Catholics, we urge you to share the news of this event with all of your families and friends as well as your pastors. All are welcome!
