Sung Mass for the Feast of the Holy Name of Mary
on Friday, Sept 12, 2014 at St. Mary Church in Greenwich, CT
at 7:30 in the evening.
(This feast was raised to a universal feast of the Roman rite after the defeat of the Turks by Charles of Lorraine (actually the primary Christian leader) and King John Sobieski of Poland before Vienna on September 11 1683. See a handy summary HERE (including some legendary culinary matters at the end of the post). It had been deleted by Paul VI but was restored by John Paul II. Let us reflect and pray on the occasion of this Feast on the tragic suffering endured by the Christians of Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and elsewhere today at the hands of militant Islam. Surprisingly, in view of these events, this is the only scheduled celebration of this feast in the “Extraordinary Form” that I have heard of in the greater New York area.)
