High Mass for the Feast of St. John Bosco in the new chapel of Mary Help of Christians in the basement of Immaculate Conception church on East 14th Street, with the gracious permission of the pastor, Msgr. Kevin J. Nelan. The chapel is named after the former parish on East 12th Street that is now dedicated to luxury condominiums. The new chapel – built with funds obtained by the sale of the site of Mary Help of Christians – is furnished with artwork taken from both Mary Help of Christians and Immaculate Conception parish itself, which had just finished additional restoration projects. And there is now even more work to do after a rampage of vandalism last week in the main church of the parish that destroyed or damaged much artwork – including the image of Mary Help of Christians brought from the now-closed parish.

Afterwards, there was a festive party with the eminently ecclesiastical Chartreuse being offered. Some of the movers and shakers of New York Catholic Traditionalism were spotted there by your reporter.

It was pointed out that St John Bosco couldn’t have conducted his apostolate under the current guidelines in force in most of the American Catholic Church ( a priest can only be in the presence of minors if one or two adults – ideally a married couple – are also present). Indeed the saint might well be arrested.
