Garbage on the steps, dumpster in the street, workmen going in and out of the open doors – what is going on at St James, a landmark and one of the oldest Catholic churches in New York? Demolition? Restoration? The parish had been joined years ago to nearby St Joseph parish. In 2011 there was a fire, on the occasion of which Cardinal Dolan described St James as “a particularly historic church.” “This church serves a very vibrant community.” he continued. 1) Was it ever reopened? A year later the clergy were clashing with neighbors over feral cats making their home there. And this year, St Joseph parish has just been suppressed in “Making All things New.” St. James, a remarkable historical and architectural landmark, now stands desolate. The last time this church was endangered (by the Archdiocese) the Order of Hibernians, which was founded here, launched a campaign which saved and restored the church. I have not heard of any similar efforts by anyone yet…….
