************
The Island of Mauritius lies in the Indian Ocean, east of the big island of Madagascar on the east coast of Africa and south of the Seychelles. Once part of the British Empire, it has remained a French and Creole speaking independent country. Mauritius is known for its natural beauty, pristine waters, luxurious hotels, and is in fact a first-class tourist and honeymoon destination. The flip side of it is unfortunately a great material and moral poverty – prostitution, drug problems and a lack of education.
The Catholic Church is on the forefront of social problems in a multi-religious and multicultural society: 51% are Hindus, 30% Catholics and Christians and 17% Muslims. However, Blessed Father Jacques Laval, a French Holy Ghost missionary priest beatified by Saint John Paul II in 1979 is seen as the saint and father of the whole Mauritian nation, regardless of religion.
The Bishop there, His Eminence Maurice Piat, was created a Cardinal by Pope Francis in October 2016. In August 2016, he had invited the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to serve in his diocese of Port- Louis. Canon Jean Marie Moreau was sent to take care of the pastoral needs of the sick at the civil hospital in the capital and two private clinics, as well as to serve the newly organized Latin Mass community.
