Pontifical Divine Liturgy Commemorating the Beatification of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich

Posted by Stuart Chessman

On Saturday, October 5th, the Most Rev. Kurt Burnette, Bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic, was the main celebrant and homilist of a Divine Liturgy commemorating the fifth anniversary of the beatification of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich (1901-1927). The Liturgy was celebrated at Blessed Miriam Teresa’s home parish of St. John the Baptist in Bayonne, NJ.

Teresa Demjanovich was baptized here on March 31, 1901.
A grand iconostasis sets the sanctuary apart.
(Above and below) Bishop Burnette preaches. The memory of the miracle that resulted in Miriam Teresa’s beatification was very much alive here.
(Above and below) the “Great Entrance” – procession with the gifts of bread and wine.
During the singing of the creed, the priests hold the veil and gently wave it over the gifts, symbolizing that the truths of faith are hidden from our eyes but we accept them as God’s revelation through faith.
The snakes adorning a Byzantine crozier allude to the staff of Moses, transformed into a serpent, and the brazen serpent raised up by Moses.
News of further miracles due to the intercession of Blessed Miriam Teresa is eagerly awaited. This parish is also looking for a miracle to continue its mission.
Special thanks should be given to the Northern Jersey Catholic Chorale which sang the musical responses.
