On Saturday, October 5th, the Most Rev. Kurt Burnette, Bishop of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic, was the main celebrant and homilist of a Divine Liturgy commemorating the fifth anniversary of the beatification of Blessed Miriam Teresa Demjanovich (1901-1927). The Liturgy was celebrated at Blessed Miriam Teresa’s home parish of St. John the Baptist in Bayonne, NJ.

A Solemn Mass was held on Wednesday, October 9 in the Church of St Catherine of Siena in New York in thanksgiving for the upcoming canonization of Cardinal Newman. Our thanks to the parish of St. Vincent Ferrer and St Catherine of Siena and especially to the parish’s music director, James Wetzel, for making this evening possible. For it involved a fortunate last minute change of location.

This past Sunday we paid a visit to the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville, New York, to attend the Traditional Latin Mass scheduled for 3 pm. It was a pleasant surprise to see that it was celebrated on the main altar of the coliseum, situated high above the other altars in the center of this building. For many years previous to this visit we had seen the Traditional Mass celebrated only at one of the lower altars – that is, when it could be celebrated in the coliseum at all.
The celebrant was Father Jeffrey L’Arche, who, as some of us may remember, in the 1990s regularly celebrated the Latin Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows in Hartford.

For a number of years, the Latin Mass was banned from the coliseum. In this 2013 photo, the annual Pilgrimage for the Restoration held Mass in a smaller rustic pavilion on the grounds of the shrine.

A few years ago, a lay organization, Friends of Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, took over ownership from the Jesuits. The Latin Mass has returned to the coliseum. (Above) This year’s Solemn Mass of the Pilgrimage for Restoration offered on September 29 (photo courtesy of Mark Anthony)

The Newman shrine in the church of Our Saviour, New York, that is. You may even pick up a Newman bookmark. But if you want to celebrate his canonization, this parish apparently only refers you to the Brooklyn Oratory for vespers.
Ot you can come to the solemn mass sponsored by this Society at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 411 E. 68th Street, New York, at 7:00 PM on October 9.
