Fordham University Jesuits will offer a Solemn Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the high altar of the Fordham University Church next Sunday, February 28 at 2:30 pm. The celebrant will be the Rev. Stephen M. Fields, S.J., Associate Professor of Theology at Georgetown University and the priest who was instrumental in bringing the Traditional Latin Mass to Georgetown a few years ago. The deacon and subdeacon will be Jesuits, and most of the servers will be Jesuit scholastics. The Fordham University Concert Choir will sing selections by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. n.b. A Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form is offered every Monday morning in the University Church at 9:15 pm.

St. Margaret Church in Waterbury, CT now has a low Mass every Sunday at 10:15 am. The Traditional Mass is also celebrated at St. Margaret’s at 9 am every Saturday. Waterbury also has at Traditional Mass every Sunday at 6 pm at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (see our pictures of the first of these Masses at this magnificent basilica: link).

There will be a Missa Cantata for the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, Monday, February 22nd, at the Church of St. Agnes in Manhattan at 6:15 PM sponsored by the New York Purgatorial Society. The Church of the Holy Innocents in Manhattan will also offer a Traditional Mass at 6 pm.

On Saturday, February 27, at 2:00 p.m. the Most Reverend John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, will administer the sacrament of Confirmation at St. Anthony of Padua Oratory, 1360 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, NJ. The Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor R. Michael Schmitz.

The fifth anniversary of Pope Benedict’s inauguration will be marked with a Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, April 24, 2010, at 1 pm. The Mass will be celebrated by Darío Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos. His Eminence is President Emeritus of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei and served under both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. The Mass will be offered in the Extraordinary Form and will be the first such Mass said at the high altar of the Shrine in nearly half a century. The priests of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter will assist at the Mass.

For the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25, Edward Cardinal Egan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York, will celebrate a Pontifical Mass according to the 1962 Missal to mark the 15th anniversary of Evangelium Vitae (“The Gospel of Life”), the pro-life encyclical by Pope John Paul II. Issued on March 25, 1995, the encyclical condemns murder, abortion and euthanasia.
The Pontifical Mass for Life begins at 7:30 PM at the Church of the Holy Innocents, 128 W. 37th Street, in Manhattan. Before Mass, there will be a Rosary for Life at 7:00 PM. David J. Hughes, organist and choirmaster at St. Mary Church, Norwalk, CT, will lead the choir singing Tomas Luis Victoria’s Missa de Beata Mariae Virgine. The Mass is being sponsored by the Agnus Dei Council of the Knights of Columbus (http://www.traditionalknight.com/Home_Page.php)
The Pontifical Mass marks an important milestone for the New York Archdiocese. It will be the first time since the Second Vatican Council that an American Cardinal will celebrate a Pontifical Mass in New York City according to the form in use before the Council.

On Sunday, February 7 at 2 pm a procession and Solemn Mass in observance of Candlemas will be celebrated by The Rev. John Ringley and sponsored by the St. Gregory Society at St. Stanislaus Church in New Haven, CT.
According to the Society’ website, “The service will be celebrated with special
pageantry and ceremony. A landmark occasion in the spiritual and cultural life of the Elm City, this event will be the first in a series of public functions marking the 25th Jubilee of the return of the traditional Latin Mass to our community offered in its age-old form. Sponsored by the Saint Gregory Society of New Haven, these services commenced at Sacred Heart Church in New Haven in January of 1986.”
Music for the service, performed by the Society’s Schola Cantorum, will include Palestrina’s “Missa Sicut lilium,” motets by Victoria, Palestrina and Lasso. All in attendance are invited to a reception which will immediately follow the Mass.
