We are interested in hearing about any Traditional masses in the Tri-State area.

The Traditional mass returned to the Dominican Church of St. Mary for the first time since the 1960s for the feast of Christ the King. The congregation filled the church and the music by the choir of the St. Gregory society was, as usual, close to perfection. This was a one-off event; let us pray that this mass leads to a more permanent presence of the Traditional mass at St. Mary’s.

It was a remarkable weekend for the Traditional Mass in Connecticut. On this glorious Autumn Sunday Solemn masses were celebrated in Norwalk and New Haven; sung traditional masses were celebrated in Waterbury and Moodus. A magnificent solemn high Mass was celebrated the day before in Stamford. Some of these masses involved the same personnel; a further solemn High Mass planned for Stamford on this feast had to be deferred simply because all trained servers were involved in one or more of the other masses. And these are only the masses that I know of!

As remarkable as the number of these services is the extraordinary level of sophistication in the ceremony, the music, the preaching etc. It is no exaggeration to say that the experience today of the Traditional Roman Rite at these services far surpasses what a congregation of a “normal” parish heard and saw prior to Vatican II.

The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury will be celebrating a sung Traditional Mass for the feast of Christ the King at 6pm, Sunday, October 26. The Schola Cantorum will sing the Byrd Mass for Three Voices and motets as well as the propers.

Eamon Duffy, the noted historian, will speak on Mary Tudor, England’s first ruling queen, and Cardinal Reginald Pole, Catholic reformer and Archbishop of Canterbury, who died 450 years ago this year. A sung requiem mass and concert, both with music from the Tudor Age, shall precede Professor Duffy’s address. All of these events are free to the public and will take place on Monday, November 17, 2008 at Corpus Christi Church in Manhattan.

The “Requiem Mass” will most likely be Novus Ordo (including some peculiar local customs of the parish) with fine music. Prof. Duffy requires no introduction to traditionalists. His work on the early reformation in England, The Stripping of the Altars, is the best work I know of on the role of the liturgy in the concrete daily life of Catholic culture and religion – and how that religion can be destroyed through manipulation of the liturgy. He has followed that up with several more specialized studies on 16th century Catholic culture in parish life and prayer books. I will not conceal that, outside of his specific field of historical and liturgical studies, Prof. Duffy adheres to the left wing of Catholic liberalism and is (accordingly) a favored commentator on things Catholic for the Tablet and the BBC. But it will be a privilege to hear his insights on the short lived Catholic renaissance under Queen Mary and Cardinal Pole, of which Prof. Duffy has already written favorably in The Stripping of the Altars.

Mary Tudor and Cardinal Pole

There will be a Missa Cantata this Sunday, October 26, at 10:30 am at the “new” St. Bridget of Kildare Church in Moodus, CT in celebration of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee of the new church. Fr. Gregoire Fluet will be the celebrant and the Gregorian Chants of the day will be sung by a schola of seminarians from Holy Apostle’s Seminary in Cromwell. The parish’s regular Tridentine Low Mass will also be celebrated at noon that day.

There will also be Missa Cantata sung by Fr. Fluet at 10am on All Saints Day, Saturday, November 1. A small choir will sing several polyphonic pieces and a lay schola will sing the Gregorian Chants of the day.

On Saturday, October 25, Father Benedict Nivakoff OSB, from Monastero S. Benedetto, Italy, will celebrate his first Traditional Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Stamford, CT at 10 am. A Traditional (Low) Mass according to the Missal of 1962 will be offered at the Church of St. Margaret of Cortona on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 3 P.M. The Rev. St. Gabriel’s parish (Father Cyprian P. La Pastina, Pastor)has been valiantly trying to celebrate the only traditional Mass in Stamford Connecticut at 12:30 on Sundays. We would have hoped for a better response – but based on experience it takes a long time for the congregation to develop around the traditional liturgy. Moreover, an afternoon schedule is never popular. The liturgy is a low mass – this particular Sunday without the benefit of servers – in a very “Reform of the Reform” architectural setting. We hope to have a further report from St. Gabriel’s soon.

The Saint Gregory Society is pleased to announce that the Feast of Christ the King (Sunday, October 26th) will be observed this year at St. Mary’s Church in downtown New Haven, with a traditional Latin Mass at 12:00 Noon.
The full Schola Cantorum of the Society will perform choral works of the great Renaissance masters Palestrina and Josquin DesPrez, and all the Gregorian chants of this magnificent feast.
This will be the first time in 40 years that the older form of the Roman Liturgy has been offered for Sunday Mass at St. Mary’s — an historic occasion, both in the life of St.
Mary’s parish and for the New Haven Catholic community at large.
The Society is grateful that the pastor of St. Mary’s
Church, Fr. Joseph Allen, has extended us this special opportunity. In view of the importance of this event, there will be no 2:00pm Latin Mass at Sacred Heart, New Haven on October 26th.
